Dog tags were introduced into the military in the 1860s because soldiers wanted a form of identification. Those who could afford it bought engraved metal tags, and by 1906 the Army issued aluminum disc ID tags for soldiers. By WWII, military ID tags were part of the official uniform. The tags were mechanically stamped with pertinent information: Name, Rank, Service number, Blood type and Religion, if desired.
